Aeronautics

Overview

The Aeronautics Project began with the founding of the Aristotle Space and Aeronautics Team (A.S.A.T.) in October 2015. Its first goal was to compete in the Air Cargo Challenge (ACC) 2017.

Since then the department has built a series of UAVs: Nephele I, Nephele II, Nephele III, Aurora, Anemone and Aeolus. Aeolus placed 9th internationally and 1st in Greece at ACC 2022 in Munich. The department is now designing Phoenix, a solar-powered UAV for monitoring forest areas and detecting wildfires, which represented Greece at the Red Bull Basement world finals in Istanbul in March 2022.

Sub-Systems

Aerodynamics Design

Overall aircraft configuration: aerodynamic analysis, airfoil selection, stability and control.

Structural

Structural integrity and durability, materials research and dynamic analysis.

Software Development

Autopilot research and development, and a fire detection system for Phoenix.

Solar Energy Management

Solar panels, battery pack and energy distribution.

Hardware Development

Flight measurement systems, flight data collection and processing, and telemetry together with the Communications subsystem.

Communications

Telecommunications for real-time UAV monitoring and control, including antenna design and placement.

Our UAVs

Phoenix

Solar-powered UAV in the design phase, built to monitor forest areas and detect wildfires with deep learning on camera images.

Mission:
Forest monitoring and wildfire detection
Target autonomy:
6 hours
Power:
Solar cells on the upper wing surface

Aeolus

Composite UAV built in-house for Air Cargo Challenge 2022 in Munich. Placed 9th internationally and 1st in Greece.

Competition:
Air Cargo Challenge 2022
Result:
9th worldwide, 1st in Greece
Flights:
5 flights without technical problems

Anemone

Composite UAV built while Air Cargo Challenge 2021 was postponed due to COVID-19. It carried electrical equipment for collecting flight data.

Material:
Composite

Aurora

Composite motor-glider flown at Air Cargo Challenge 2019 in Stuttgart. The fastest and largest aircraft the team has built.

Competition:
Air Cargo Challenge 2019
Result:
10th worldwide
Type:
Composite motor-glider

Nephele III

Improved version of Nephele II, flown at Air Cargo Challenge 2019 with the same construction methods and better performance.

Competition:
Air Cargo Challenge 2019
Result:
12th worldwide

Nephele II

Optimized successor of the first UAV, made mainly of balsa wood and carbon fiber. Flown at Air Cargo Challenge 2017.

Competition:
Air Cargo Challenge 2017
Result:
12th of 36, 1st among newcomers and Greek teams

Nephele I

The team's first UAV, an experimental design that built the team's design experience.
